Each gene is a slider from 0 to 100, with no budget: both ends have a gain and a cost (point at a gene to see them). Genes for parts this body lacks are hidden until you add the part.
How it keeps company with its own kind. Low: a loner that turns away from its kind (at 0 as soon as one is near). Around 35 it pays no attention to them. From 40: a herd, drawn to its kind until a crowd forms, then it makes room (at 70, about four around it); the higher, the tighter the group. At 100 it crowds together without limit. The inspector shows the same scale; it evolves.
Three more bars, 50 in the middle (the preset as it comes). Caution: how hard pain makes it run and stop eating (a bird: how soon it takes off when a bigger stranger comes near). Wanderlust: how much it wanders and turns at random, and how much it rests when full. Generosity: how readily it gives food to kin it touches, and how full it must be first. They set only the starting brain: evolution can change it.
The brain is a small neural network. A preset is only its starting wiring: evolution keeps changing it. Each extra Brain cell on the body gives the network room to grow.
It replaces what you have on the designer; change it as you like after.
